Introduction
Humza Yousaf formed the Yousaf Cabinet on 29 March 2023 until 25 April 2024, following his appointment as First Minister of Scotland at the Court of Session.") followed the resignation of Nicola Sturgeon as First Minister and leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) on 15 February, triggering a leadership contest which Yousaf won.
Background
Contenido
Training
Humza Yousaf presented his cabinet on March 29, 2023. He confirmed Shona Robison as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance. He appointed several campaign allies to key positions, including Neil Gray (Wellbeing Economics), Jenny Gilruth (Education) and Màiri McAllan (Net Zero). For the first time in Scotland, the majority of cabinet secretaries were women (seven out of ten).[4].
The new Prime Minister confirmed his intention to maintain the Bute House Agreement with the Greens, thus securing a majority of 70 seats out of 129 in parliament. Patrick Harvie and Lorna Slater continued as ministers representing the Greens.[5].
Breach of agreement and resignation
In April 2024, Yousaf announced the government's departure from the Bute House Agreement, claiming that the pact had “served its purpose” and that differences over climate policy had become unsustainable.[6] As a result, the two Green ministers resigned and the party announced its support for a motion of no confidence against Yousaf, leaving him without a majority.[7].
