Zebra crossing
Introduction
The pedestrian crossings, pedestrian path, pedestrian crossing or zebra crossings are the intersection area between road traffic and pedestrian traffic; It is the part of the pedestrian route that crosses the vehicle circulation road, at the same or a different level.
According to the General Traffic Regulations in force in Spain, a pedestrian crossing is defined as "A series of very wide lines, arranged on the pavement of the road in bands parallel to its axis and forming a set transversal to the road, indicates a crossing for pedestrians, where drivers of vehicles or animals must give way to them. Lines of other colors that alternate with the white ones may not be used. » (Art. 168 c).[1].
Although the general concept is evident, there is no agreement regarding the definition of its limits. When talking about the width of a pedestrian crossing, it is not clear what specific dimension is being referred to, partly because many regulations confuse the concepts of ford and pedestrian crossing.[2].
The most appropriate criterion considers the width of the pedestrian crossing as the total length of the fords that limit it, and will coincide with the length of the signaling bands of the corresponding zebra crossing.[3].
It is important to distinguish it from the passage for cyclists (Art. 168 d), Crossing mark for cyclists:[4] A mark consisting of two discontinuous and parallel transverse lines on the road indicates a passage for cyclists, where they have priority.
