Watertightness
Introduction
Mechanical gasket, sealing gasket, gasket or gasket are called components made of adaptable material that serve to seal well the union of the machined faces of the closing elements of the transmission boxes and generally in any hydraulic and/or pneumatic element, which carry lubricant inside. These prevent leakage of lubricant, or fluid to be sealed, to the outside due to any small defect in the machining and closure areas or other mechanisms that have internal pressure such as combustion engines or compressors.[1]
A gasket is made of a deformable material, which allows creating a static seal and maintaining said seal under the operating conditions of the mechanical assembly.[2].
The joints save money in the machining of the joining surfaces because their coupling does not have to be completely exact, since the joint corrects any errors that may exist in the machining.
The most significant sealing gasket that exists is the one that intervenes in the union between the cylinder block of an internal combustion engine and the cylinder head "Cylinder head (engine)") of the same, due to the high temperatures and pressures it supports.
The gasket material can be: rubber, silicone, soft metal, cork, felt, fiberglass or a plastic polymer (polychlorotrifluoroethylene). Gaskets for specific uses may contain asbestos.

La mayoría de las aplicaciones industriales de juntas implican que los tornillos ejerzan una compresión muy superior a los 14 MPa (2000 psi). En general, hay varias trecomendaciones que permiten un mejor rendimiento de las juntas. Una de las más probadas es: "Cuanto más carga de compresión se ejerza sobre la junta, más durará".
