Operating principles
Physical foundations of sedimentation
The basic principle of the decanter is based on sedimentation, a physical process in which solid particles suspended in the water, due to their greater density, settle at the bottom of the tank under the action of gravity. The sedimentation rate depends on the size, shape and density of the particles, as well as the viscosity and density of the fluid.
To optimize sedimentation, the design of the settler must guarantee that the water flow is laminar, avoiding turbulence that could reactivate the settled solids. Hydraulic retention time is a key parameter that determines the efficiency of the process, ensuring that particles have sufficient time to decant.
Furthermore, in certain cases, coagulants and flocculants are used to add fine particles and increase their size, thus facilitating their sedimentation in the decanter.
Components and dynamics of the process
A typical settler is composed of a tank or reservoir with water inlet and outlet, a system for collecting sludge settled at the bottom and mechanisms to prevent floating solids or scales from leaving with the effluent. The internal configuration may include distribution channels, liners and scrapers to remove sediment.
