Jacques-François Blondel (1705-1774), was a French architect and urban planner, one of the most important architectural theorists of the century. He would exert a notable influence on the French rationalist architects of the 19th century. He was the grandson of the architect François Blondel, known as François Blondel the Great, architect of the Villa de Paris, author of the Porte Saint-Denis in 1672, and whose architecture course had appeared in four volumes in 1683.

In the year 1750 he began to postulate novel ideas that were the trigger for the main architects of the Enlightenment movement.

Blondel believed in the plastic character of the architectural body as a whole and its individual features, the predominance of holes in the walls and was against decorative waste. Furthermore, for him architecture is a creative art, which must be clearly distinguished from the construction process.

He emphasized the basic principles of hierarchy, graduation and concentration. He incessantly advocated the perfect unity of the parts, which could be obtained through symmetry. He looked for resources to unify the interior space, proposing the enfilade"), joining the rooms together and unifying the interior view with the exterior and he fervently believed in the care that a building should have in relation to its environment.

It can be said that his ideas were to a certain extent functionalist since he attacked decorative ornamentation. Architecture required solidity, comfort, symmetry but above all, character. The idea of ​​character referred to the fact that the building should “speak for itself”, transmitting clear messages to visitors, just as each human being could say and think whatever they wanted based on the ideal of freedom of expression and equality established by Rousseau years before.

Blondel was the main teacher of the architects Étienne-Louis Boulleé and Claude-Nicolas Ledoux, who would become the greatest exponents of Enlightenment architecture, transforming all of their mentor's ideas into building proposals and projects.

Newton's Cenotaph

In 1784 the architect designed this building, which is the result of a synthesis of his architectural concepts. The project is a large symmetrical hollow sphere that had different openings on its entire surface that meant that when it was daytime in the outside world, inside the building the celestial vault with the stars was simulated and when it was nighttime outside, the interior would be illuminated with a large astrolabe. There are several messages behind this spatial idea, on the one hand the representation of Newton's knowledge with a monumentally large and symmetrical sphere, the most perfect shape conceived by utopian architects, showing the immensity of the contribution to humanity that the physicist made, on the other the use of controlled natural light to generate sensations inside, simulating the celestial vault.

Ledoux designed two theoretical works, which could not be built, that express his architectural will and how he imagined this new architecture. The first project is the prairie caretaker's house, which was made up of a perfect sphere that had 4 entrances on each of its sides and that housed the home inside. In the drawings you can see the desire to convey that nature was the most perfect creation in the world, therefore whoever took care of it had to live in a house whose volumetrics represented perfection, and that was the sphere. The floor plan was symmetrical in every way, that is why it had four entrances with a staircase each and did not have any type of ornamentation. The second work is the house of the caretaker of the river, therefore it had to be crossed by the waters of the river and must have the form of a drain, in this way anyone who observed this construction would not doubt what the inhabitant's occupation was. That house was for him and no one else, individual and unrepeatable.

Es en este momento cuando se trató de dar a la arquitectura una nueva identidad ya que las revoluciones sociales y políticas declaraban la pérdida de una identidad propia, esto se debió a que la ilustración buscaba educar, transmitir los conocimientos existentes de la época, combatir la ignorancia. En arquitectura, esa educación, implicaba el conocimiento de las fuentes antiguas tales como Vitruvio, Palladio y Vignola, quienes tomaron los principios griegos y romanos de la arquitectura. En ese momento en Francia, comienzan a surgir nuevos proyectos y comitentes que no eran exclusivamente la iglesia: museos, viviendas, fábricas, bibliotecas, entre otros. Dos de los pensadores más importantes de la época fueron Rousseau y Montesquieu cuyas ideas permitieron abrirles los ojos a las personas sobre diversos temas.

In The Social Contract, Rousseau establishes the possibility of a reconciliation between nature and culture: man can live in freedom in a truly egalitarian society. Montesquieu was a very active intellectual in the French Academy who had been ordained in Freemasonry in Great Britain. One of the most innovative ideas that he proposed was the division of powers in a government, laying the foundations of a republican system to this day with the existence of three powers, the Executive, Legislative and Judicial. After the revolution, as France adopted a republican model of government, new government institutions appeared that deserved buildings that were up to par. It is at that time that the architects who belonged to this utopian movement saw a possibility to make their ideas and projects known by entering various competitions but losing most of them.
