Vertical Impact Crusher
Definition
Basic concept of vertical impact crusher
Vertical Shaft Impactor (VSI) is a crushing equipment mainly used for size reduction of materials in the mining and construction industry. Its operation is based on the acceleration of materials within a crushing chamber where they are impacted and fragmented by the centrifugal force generated by a rotating vertical axis.
This type of crusher is especially valued for its ability to produce aggregates with cubic and uniform shapes, which makes it ideal for applications that require high quality standards in the final material, such as the manufacture of concrete and asphalt. Additionally, its design allows for reduced wear and relatively easy maintenance compared to other crushing equipment.
Operating principles
Impact crushing mechanism
The vertical impact crusher operates by accelerating material toward the periphery of a rotor that rotates at high speed. The material is propelled against impact surfaces or against other fragments of material that act as crushing media, causing fracture and reduction in the size of the original material. This process is carried out mainly by the kinetic energy transferred at the moment of impact.
The rotor, located in a vertical position, rotates counterclockwise and is designed to maximize the material output speed. Kinetic energy is key in this process, as it determines the efficiency and fineness of the crushed material. The design of the chamber and the positioning of the impact surfaces directly influence the quality of the final product.
Crushing occurs in two stages: initially, the material is thrown against an impact ring or hard liner, where it fragments, and subsequently, the smaller fragments strike each other within the chamber, generating complementary reduction and a more uniform shape.
Main components and their function
The essential components of a vertical impact crusher include the rotor, crushing chamber, feeding system, discharge system and impact liners. The rotor is the rotating component that imparts speed to the material, and its design can vary depending on the specific application.
