Culture, tourism and perception
Contenido
Symbolic transformation and urban art
The Independencias connection paths have become a reference for symbolic and cultural transformation in Medellín. Beyond their function as mobility infrastructure, they represent an icon of resistance, territorial resignification and urban art in an area that for years was associated with violence and insecurity. [9].
Since their implementation, these trails have been intervened with murals, graffiti, sculptures and performances that narrate the collective memory of the neighborhood. Projects like Graffitour are guided by local artists like “el Perro” and “Jeihhco”, who use art as a pedagogical and testimonial tool of the process of change.[12].
Local economy and community tourism
The Graffitour receives more than 7,000 visitors every month, including locals and foreigners, who visit murals, escalators and memory spaces, generating income for the local economy and international visibility of the project.[13].
Artistic and community tourism has energized the local economy, generating income through cultural guide services, crafts, traditional gastronomy and participatory experiences. Much of this offer comes from initiatives such as Casa Kolacho, which integrate hip hop, muralism and popular education.[14].
The Independencias connecting trail, along with the murals of Comuna13 - San Javier and the Media Ladera viaduct, has established itself as one of the main tourist attractions in Medellín. This set of urban infrastructure and community artistic expressions has been integrated into the official community tourism routes promoted by the municipal administration and the private sector.[15].
The Graffitour route, in particular, receives more than 7,000 visitors monthly, including locals and foreigners, who visit the escalators, the neighborhood murals, and the historical memory points of the sector.[16] It is estimated that between 6,000 and 8,000 people visit the sector weekly, generating more than 30,000 visits per month.[17].
Tensions of memory tourism
Tourism to Comuna13 - San Javier has been framed by some analysts as an "openness to tourists of historical memory", in which the tours are built on collective experiences still in the process of healing. In an article by ElPaís (Colombia) "El País (Colombia)"), published in March 2023, it is highlighted that, although community tourism has generated economic opportunities and symbolizes the transformation of a territory previously stigmatized by violence, it also poses challenges around the commercialization of memory, territorial balance and the sustainability of the model. "What is offered is memory, still in reconstruction, wrapped in tensions," says the chronicle.[18].
This tourist flow has promoted community ventures in areas such as gastronomy, sale of crafts and cultural services. Institutional actions have also been implemented to improve the tourist experience, such as lighting, signage, security and pedestrian access, in order to balance the flow of visitors and community life in Comuna13 - San Javier.[19][20].
Tourist projection
The recognition of Commune 13 - San Javier as a cultural destination has increased after the expansion of the Media Ladera viaduct, which extends the cultural tourist route by approximately 102 m, connecting more neighborhoods and strengthening integration with the art route.[21].
Finally, Graffitour has been recognized by international media and platforms. In 2024 it was included in the top 15 world tourism experiences according to TripAdvisor "Best of the Best", reflecting the cultural and transformative value of the project.[22].
In 2022, Medellín received more than 1,400,000 visitors and far exceeded the projected goal, consolidating the year as a historic year in tourism. Although specific figures are not detailed by commune, these figures support the projection of visitors who come to Comuna13 - San Javier as one of the most visited sectors of the city.[23].
