It was released in France on November 16, 2015 on Canal+ "Canal+ (France)"). The first season consists of ten episodes and before its premiere the French channel announced its renewal for a second season. Filming began in January 2015.[1].
A second season was ordered before the first season premiered. Filming for the second season began in February 2016; Its story took place four years after that of the first season. The second season premiered on March 27, 2017 in France. On September 14, 2016, producer Claude Chelli confirmed that Versailles had been renewed for a third season, which began filming in April 2017. On April 17, 2018, Variety reported that the third season of Versailles would be its last.
The series has been filmed in English to have greater international projection, a fact that has received some criticism.[2] It is already being broadcast in other countries such as Spain, whose premiere took place on November 17 on Canal+.[3] In the United Kingdom, BBC Two has already acquired the rights to the series for its projection.[4].
Argument
Year 1667. The obsession of Louis XIV (George Blagden), the famous French king, is to build a great palace in Versailles, land on the outskirts of the French capital. All of this with the aim of exalting his figure and subduing the nobility, a great opponent of the monarch's plans, whom they put in constant trouble. At the same time, the series also tells other themes, such as the complicated relationship with his brother Philip I of Orleans (Alexander Vlahos), the protagonist's relationships with his countless lovers or the constant intrigues of the Court.
