Annual Meeting of Associations

The Hispania Nostra association has promoted, since 1978, an annual Meeting of Associations and Entities related to the defense, recovery and dissemination of Cultural and natural heritage.

In this way, the Annual Meetings of Hispania Nostra Associations are a meeting point for members and supporters of the association by exposing topics of interest regarding cultural heritage, in which collaboration is encouraged between the different members and associations that make up the organization.[21]​.

The location of the meetings varies annually, which allows increasing the visibility and enhancement of different places in Spanish geography by carrying out activities and visits to monuments and historical buildings, as well as a program of presentations and round tables on current topics related to cultural heritage.[22]​.

Furthermore, the Annual Meetings of Hispania Nostra Associations have the usefulness of serving as a space to recognize and reward the work of people and entities dedicated to the safeguarding of Spanish cultural heritage in categories such as conservation, dissemination or awareness-raising.[23]​.

The 42nd meeting took place in Badajoz, Extremadura, between March 23 and 26, 2023.[24]​.

Awards

The Hispania Nostra Awards are organized jointly by the Hispania Nostra Association and the Banco Santander Foundation, with the intention of contributing to the dissemination of good practices in the field of cultural and natural heritage in Spain.[25]​.

Good practices are considered those that propose creative and sustainable solutions, generate ideas or provide guidelines that favor the adoption of effective measures for the development of new projects. UNESCO specifies as characteristics of Good Practices: innovation, effectiveness, sustainability, exemplarity and transferability, among other matters.[26]​[27]​.

In 2012 there was the first call for these annual awards, which were awarded in three categories:

• - Award for intervention in the territory or landscape.[28]​.

• - Award for heritage conservation as a factor of economic and social development.[29]​.

• - Award for Cultural Heritage signage.[30]​.

Furthermore, Hispania Nostra, as an integral part of Europa Nostra, is in charge of managing the annual call for the aforementioned awards in Spain, taking care of the presentation of Spanish projects, as well as the dissemination and coordination of the awards that Spain has obtained. Since its inception, 190 awards have been granted, the documentation of which is in the study phase.

Heritage Red List

The Red List of Heritage is an initiative born in November 2007, with the aim of publicizing and protecting that part of the historical heritage that is in a state of abandonment and risk of disappearance. It is prepared under the supervision of a scientific commission made up of specialists in the field and includes those cultural assets that, based on a series of predetermined inclusion criteria, are considered to have a unique value and are at risk of disappearing due to degradation, ignorance, looting, uncontrolled urbanization or thoughtless alteration of their values.[31][32]​.

The categories into which it is divided are: archaeological heritage, civil heritage, religious heritage, industrial heritage, military heritage and natural heritage. In this way, a response is given to a need not covered until then, such as having an instrument for raising awareness and warning of the different categories that make up Spanish cultural heritage.[33]​.

The Red List is updated periodically, in order to publicize changes in the state of conservation of cultural assets, the measures adopted for their protection and their future transfer to the Black or Green lists as well as the inclusion of new assets. Therefore, it is a useful and necessary tool to guarantee the protection of our cultural heritage and promote collaboration between institutions and citizens.[34]​.

The criteria for inclusion in the Red List are both objective and subjective in nature:[35]​.

• - Level of legal protection.

• - Threats (presence or probability of harmful events).

• - Situation of abandonment or negligence.

• - Circumstances that have led to the deterioration.

• - Vulnerability.

• - Existence or not of an intervention plan (even if it is not immediate).

• - Asset value.

• - Social Relevance.

Similarly, Hispania Nostra prepares a Black List, composed of those heritage assets that are irrecoverable or already missing, and a Green List, with assets that, having previously been on the Red List, have been recovered.[36]​.

La asociación Hispania Nostra defiende el patrimonio cultural en toda su integridad conceptual y geográfica y desarrolla numerosos programas, entre los que destacan:.

• - Los Premios Hispania Nostra a las Buenas Prácticas en materia de conservación y restauración del patrimonio cultural y natural desde 2011.[13]​.

• - La Reunión Anual de Asociaciones y Entidades relacionadas con el Patrimonio Cultural. Desde 1978 y hasta 2015 se han realizado 34 encuentros.[14]​[15]​.

• - El dictado de conferencias, ciclos temáticos, jornadas y debates sobre materias relacionadas con las buenas prácticas y todos sus fines fundacionales.

• - La confección de la Lista Roja de Patrimonio en peligro.[18]​[19]​.

• - La gestión de las candidaturas españolas en el Premio Unión Europea de Patrimonio Cultural / Europa Nostra.[20]​.
