Aesthetic

There are a growing number of artists using “social design” to describe their work. .[1]​.

“Aesthetic activism” can have various interpretations, but in a general sense it could be defined in a way of thinking and expressing ideas with a renewed and updated conception according to the changes of the Planet and the most urgent needs. Many artists have appeared who make sculptures with waste, of impressive quality and without losing the conventional aesthetic values ​​of art. Many bronze statues are made by casting smaller pieces rescued from homes or industries that disuse them. The change in mentality and aesthetics is not only in the chosen materials, but also in the themes: anything that promotes equality, balance and human values. The viewer can become an active member of the creation of the work, as for example in the Pantheon of Banned Books, created by Marta Minujin based on books donated and used as “bricks” of the work. Many artists and even city councils carry out art demonstrations in their cities with buildings, statues or monuments, but they have involved very high costs for the function they fulfill, or a decision made without considering the environment. A study of the resources available is essential. In this way, the works become more “genuine” (“honest art”) because they do not have double intentions of recognition or popularity of the author, but rather their genesis is a sincere love for what is done and the contribution it can represent. An excessively expensive artistic work can be more a demonstration of lavishness than an authentic love of art and what it generates in the viewer: mobilizing the soul (just as Kandinsky would say). In that sense, Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) is a pioneer in the essence of art over the concrete material form: what matters is achieving the effect in the heart of the recipient.

Social and Political

Society is an artificial reality and therefore can be changed, to a large extent and abruptly or gradually, by organized people (in companies, in Universities, in Institutes, in Unions, in political parties, in non-profit organizations...).[2]​[3]​ In this vision, social design is an inescapable reality; It exists and people modify it, whether people recognize it or not.[4]​.

Social design requires skills that open the creative process to collective participation for a culture that imagines and realizes its own future. That is the heart of this new and powerful tool for business. Just as companies need sustainable products and processes, they have to include the sustainability of the people they interact with and society to be successful. Luckily, there are more and more examples of companies that are changing the game in their favor through the use of social design.[5]​.

Strategic thinking

Another starting point to define what is understood by social design is from the point of view of strategic thinking. Applied to communities or interest groups, it includes the creation of objectives and the execution of actions to achieve them, by the members themselves. Thus, for example, tradition and market economy can be placed in interaction and collaborate instead of compete. As Amartya Sen points out, poverty can be considered as deprivation of capabilities; By focusing on capabilities and not income (income generation), for example, Amartya Sen suggests that the development of various social aspects can contribute to overall development. Urban strategic planning is a particular case of strategic thinking and presents an interesting case study of Social Design applied to the ways of governing a city, a metropolitan area/region.

Scientific research on Social Design

Having accepted and assumed the fact that human societies have been designed by people, the actors in this field consider applying the generally accepted scientific methodology as well as tools already proven in other areas, to model existing forms of government—companies, cities...—and extract a more general theory. In this regard, you can consult the conference given by Jay W. Forrester [9] at the University of Seville [10].

An attempt was made to launch a Research Plan [11] that should work on the governance of cities, delving into the use of structural equations (including path analysis and dynamic systems, Thomas Saaty's hierarchical analytical method), the use of indicators, the study of complexity and, in parallel, qualitative work. —Delphi- and quantitative—Likert. In short, it is about continuing to bring the technique closer to the design of the government of large cities and metropolitan areas, to the study, approval and modification of Laws, consciously limiting the use of natural language and striving to enhance the approach from a perspective based on a theory, on quantitative and qualitative data, on calculations, on the comparison of the different possible scenarios. It is very difficult that recognized Social Design is almost non-existent, while industrial, architectural, computer design... etc., is so technologically evolved.

There have been unsuccessful attempts to promote collaboration using Wiki technology [12].
