Urban silence plan
Introduction
The El Silencio Redevelopment or simply El Silencio is an urbanization of Caracas, Venezuela that is located within the Central District of that city in the Cathedral Parish "Parroquia San Juan (Caracas)") of the Libertador Municipality.
History
As soon as Caracas was founded in 1567, the area now occupied by El Silencio was called El Tartagal. At that time it was a field to the west of the original 25 blocks of the city and Garcí González de Silva bought those lands a few years after the founding of Caracas. The name El Silencio is presumed to have originated after an epidemic that caused the death of all the inhabitants of that area.[1].
For centuries, poor neighborhoods continued to settle in that area, until the government of Isaías Medina Angarita decided to order the demolition of all the houses, bars and brothels that were in the area to make way for the redevelopment of El Silencio on July 25, 1942. Construction work began on January 4, 1943, with the architect Carlos Raúl Villanueva being in charge of its design along with the sculptor Francisco Narvaez.
Block No. 1 was started in February 1944. The first of the blocks to be inaugurated was No. 7 on July 5, 1944. On August 26, 1945, the El Silencio Redevelopment was inaugurated, with 7 blocks and two plazas, Plaza O'Leary in the center of the area and Plaza Miranda "Plaza Miranda (Caracas)") located to the east of the urbanization. In 1969 the project received the Construction Prize awarded by the Venezuelan Chamber of Construction.[2] In 1999 El Silencio was declared an asset of cultural interest. Since 2003, the Mayor's Office of Libertador has recovered the area of what has since been called Urbanización El Silencio.[3].
