Urban logistics hubs
Introduction
Vicálvaro-Mercancías, also called Centro Logístico de Vicálvaro, is a goods station and logistics terminal located in the Spanish municipality of Madrid. It is located between the Madrid district of Vicálvaro and the municipality of Coslada and has a wide beach of roads for maneuvers. Currently the facilities depend on the Adif entity. The complex coexists with the so-called Dry Port of Madrid, which is located in its facilities.
Railway situation
The station is part of the routes of the following railway lines:
• - Vicálvaro-Vicálvaro Mercancías Iberian gauge railway line, kilometer point 2.1.[1].
• - Vicálvaro Mercancías-Bif Iberian gauge railway line. Vicálvaro Mercancías, kilometer point 2.1.[1].
• - O'Donnell-Vicálvaro Mercancías Iberian gauge railway line, kilometer point 15.0.[1].
History
During the 1960s, the Madrid railway network was reorganized, with the construction of new lines and stations. In this context, the need to build a new classification station located in the area of the new railway links was raised, choosing the Vicálvaro land for this purpose. The works were carried out by the state company RENFE, and the new facilities were inaugurated on November 28, 1973.[2] The station then had a length of 4 kilometers and a width of 300 meters, occupying an area of 90 hectares.[2] Initially it had a platform with 47 tracks, with maximum lengths of 650 meters.[3] The terminal had three bundles of tracks: one for reception of convoys, another for classification and another for the expedition. Other complementary facilities were later added to the original facilities, such as workshops for locomotives and towing material, loading and unloading areas, etc.
In January 2005, with the division of RENFE into Renfe Operadora and Adif, the infrastructure became dependent on the latter.
Previously its name was Vicálvaro-Clasificación, but within the homogenization plan applied by Adif in the 2010s to the names of terminals related to merchandise, it was changed to Vicálvaro-Mercancías.
In 2019, work began to convert the Vicálvaro classification station into an intermodal logistics complex for the loading and unloading of transport units, within a project that is planned to be carried out in three phases between 2020 and 2024. Another objective sought by this project is to convert Vicálvaro into a logistics terminal that serves as a link between the Atlantic Corridor and the Mediterranean Corridor.
• - Madrid-Abroñigal Station.
• - Villaverde Station-Classification.
• - Dry port of Madrid.
