Urban laboratory architecture
Introduction
The headquarters of the JORBA Laboratories (popularly known as "The Pagoda") was a building located in Madrid, an example of lost architecture in the city. In the vicinity of Avenida de América "Avenida de América (Madrid)") (in front of the N-II highway) it was designed by the Spanish architect Miguel Fisac.[1] The popular name of the building as Pagoda refers to the visible structure of the tower. The building contained the warehouses, production and administrative offices of the JORBA laboratories. In 1999, it was controversially demolished, depriving Madrid of an architectural work of universal reference.[2].
Characteristics
The original structure of the building consisted of an office tower in which each floor was represented rotated 45° with respect to the previous one, a characteristic that made it appear like a pagoda. The transitions between the floors were resolved with a ruled surface in the shape of a hyperboloid.[3][4].
History
The demolition of The Pagoda was attributed to land speculation. The Madrid City Council provided the demolition license and the building was demolished in July 1999. The building was not included in the catalog of protected buildings of the General Urban Planning Plan of Madrid of 1997.
The Pagoda was one of the three Spanish projects present at MoMA in 1979 for the exhibition Transformations in Modern Architecture.[5].
