Science and technology in Colombia is a set of actions carried out by the public and private sector, aimed at research, development and innovation.
History
Technological innovation in Colombia has been a progressive process that reflects the economic, social and cultural changes in the country. Since the 20th century, the nation has gone through different stages of modernization, driven by state policies, private initiatives, and the growing participation of universities and research centers.
First initiatives (1900–1950)
During the first half of the century, innovation in Colombia was mainly linked to industrialization and development of basic infrastructure. The establishment of textile, energy and transportation companies marked a starting point. Institutions such as the National University of Colombia began to strengthen engineering programs, laying the foundations for the training of professionals in science and technology.
Industrial and scientific expansion (1950–1980)
At this stage, the country experienced greater openness towards foreign technology. The creation of Colciencias in 1968 (today the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation) represented a milestone in the promotion of research and development (R&D). In addition, sectors such as petrochemicals and pharmaceutical industry were consolidated, which demanded transfer of knowledge and specialized human talent.[1].
Globalization and digital transformation (1980–2000)[2]
With the economic opening of the 90s, technological innovation in Colombia became increasingly linked to . Telecommunications, computing and automation technologies were introduced. During this period, national companies began to compete internationally thanks to the modernization of production and logistics processes.[3].
