urban footprint
Introduction
This annex contains a list of the 100 most populated agglomerations or urban areas in the world, ordered according to the statistical calculations of City Population of January 2025, together with the estimates published by Demographia in August of the same year, as well as the UN estimates of 2018.[1][2][3].
City Population defines agglomeration as “a central city and neighboring localities linked mostly by (more or less) continuously built-up areas. Some agglomerations have more than one central city.
For its part, Demographia defines urban areas as “urban footprints, or extensions of urbanization on the natural environment. “Urban footprint data are reported without regard to political boundaries that are typically associated with metropolitan areas or subnational jurisdictions.”
