Introduction
Expanded Metropolitan Complex,[1] also known as Macrometropolis Paulista,[2][3] is a conurbation of metropolises located around Greater São Paulo, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil.[4] It emerged in the conurbation between the metropolitan centers of São Paulo located around the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, which with 21.4 million inhabitants.[5][6] It is one of the most populated urban agglomerations in the world.[7][8][9][10].
In addition to "Greater São Paulo", the complex encompasses the metropolitan regions of Campinas, Baixada Santista, Paraíba Valley, Jundiaí), Piracicaba") and Sorocaba"), as well as perimetropolitan regions in the process of conurbation, such as Bragança Paulista and its surroundings. The total population of these areas, combined with that of the capital of São Paulo, exceeds 33.6 million inhabitants,[11] or approximately 75% of the population of the entire state of São Paulo.[8].
The macrometropolis is the only urban formation of its type in the southern hemisphere and covers an area of 53.3 thousand [11] square kilometers, its urbanized area is approximately 11,700.2 km² [12] (50% of the urbanized area of the state) uniting 174 municipalities [11] that together house 18% of the Brazilian population and retain a good part of the industrial and economic production of the country.[8].
