La universidad cuenta con 23 departamentos, adscritos a las distintas facultades, que son los encargados de desarrollar programas de investigación, servicios de docencia, actividades de extensión y prestación de servicios orientados a satisfacer las necesidades de la comunidad en el ámbito de su especialidad.
Department of Physics (DF)
DF, attached to the Faculty of Sciences, has adequate research laboratories and sufficient personnel to participate in the execution of research projects that involve collaboration with national and international centers. These projects will be focused on addressing the country's technological problems and will contribute to the positioning of the Department in the field of national scientific and technological development.
Department of Mathematics (DM)
DM, attached to the Faculty of Sciences, is dedicated to pure and applied research in mathematics for fields of knowledge that require strategic development in the country's productive and service forces, in the context of economic, scientific and technical globalization. Its objective is to enhance productive capacity and decision-making through the adaptation or creation of technologies that allow better use of resources. In addition, it offers advice and technical support in multidisciplinary projects developed by the National Polytechnic School, thus contributing to the search for solutions to national problems.
Department of Biology (DB)
DB, attached to the Faculty of Sciences, contributes to scientific and cultural development, as well as to the conservation of Ecuador's biodiversity through zoological and paleontological studies. These studies provide a solid basis for the sustainable use of biological resources and for scientific dissemination about them. Additionally, the department focuses on contributing to the country's environmental education through activities designed for this purpose in the area of Environmental Education.
Department of Quantitative Economics (DEC)
DEC, attached to the Faculty of Sciences, is an interdisciplinary research entity in Quantitative Economics that brings together professors and researchers from the Faculty of Sciences of the National Polytechnic School (EPN). Its main function lies in the academic training of professionals in Economics and Engineering in Economic and Financial Sciences, in addition to contributing to the analysis and search for solutions to society's economic challenges. The DEC is guided by its main lines of research: Welfare Economics, Industrial Economics and Economic Policy.
Department of Administrative Sciences (DEPCA)
DEPCA, attached to the Faculty of Administrative Sciences, focuses on three fundamental pillars: the creation of relevant knowledge for organizational management, the dissemination of this knowledge through training actions in the different careers of the EPN, and the application of said knowledge for the provision of services aimed at organizations and Ecuadorian society in general. This is done to satisfy the demands for teaching and research in the area of administrative sciences required by both the EPN courses and by Ecuadorian society as a whole, thus guaranteeing the training of professionals with the highest academic level.
Department of Organizational Studies and Human Development (DESODEH)
DESODEH, attached to the Faculty of Administrative Sciences, seeks to generate knowledge through research, scientific dissemination, management and the development of human capabilities. This is done with the purpose of actively contributing to the transformation of organizational environments, seeking the well-being of people. The approach adapts to current political, social and economic changes, and the main contribution is made from scientific management.
Department of Automation and Industrial Control (DACI)
DACI, attached to the Faculty of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, specializes in the development of applied research programs and projects, as well as in the provision of services to various sectors, covering areas such as industrial automation, electronic control, instrumentation, supervision and data acquisition systems, virtual instrumentation, biomedical applications, programmable controllers (PLC), industrial communications and process control. It collaborates closely with companies and institutions to offer innovative solutions that contribute to technological advancement and regional economic development.
Department of Electric Energy (DEE)
DEE, attached to the Faculty of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, is dedicated to the creation, development and execution of academic, research and networking projects in areas related to Electrical Engineering, with the aim of achieving excellence in all aspects of its work and promoting national interests. It has a team of highly qualified professors, both in the scientific and professional fields, to provide solid academic support to the careers of Electrical Engineering, Control, Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Networks, as well as to the postgraduate programs in Electrical Engineering Sciences, Business Administration of the Electrical Sector, Electrical Distribution Systems and Intelligent Electrical Grids, at the Higher Diploma, Specialization and Master's level.
Department of Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Networks (DETRI)
DETRI, attached to the Faculty of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, focuses on creating, developing and executing academic, research and extension projects in the areas of knowledge related to Electronic Engineering in Telecommunications and Information Networks. In addition to planning and executing Research and Extension programs and projects, which promote the development of technologies for the benefit of the community.
Department of Mechanical Engineering (DIM)
DIM, attached to the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, is committed to addressing the challenges of today's world, characterized by its complexity and dynamism, through the development of human talent in the field of Mechanical Engineering. In this sense, it seeks to promote a symbiosis between humans and computer technology, with the aim of creating an interaction that allows our students to generate rational mental maps and learn from them.
Materials Department (DMT)
DMT, attached to the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, has as its main objective to contribute to the resolution of the country's scientific-technological demands in the field of Engineering Materials. This is achieved through applied scientific research, links with society, the provision of services and the transfer of scientific-technical knowledge. Additionally, DMT focuses on the training of academics and professionals in mechanical engineering, promoting values of solidarity and critical thinking, enabling them to contribute to the well-being of the community.
Department of Chemical Engineering (DIQ)
DIQ, attached to the Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Agribusiness, offers technical advice in a wide range of areas, including fluid mechanics, mass transfer, industrial plant design, mass and energy balance, instrumental analysis, reaction engineering and petroleum. This advice is provided to support both companies and industries as well as academic institutions in solving specific problems, designing processes and optimizing operations related to chemical engineering and its industrial applications.
Department of Food Sciences and Biotechnology (DECAB)
DECAB, attached to the Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Agribusiness, offers an exceptional combination of resources, including a team of highly experienced technicians and modern laboratory and pilot plant facilities. Regardless of the presentation of your product, we are prepared to assist you in its development, improvement, innovation and resolution of technological problems, as well as in the control of its quality in chemical, rheological, nutritional, microbiological or sensory aspects. Our process capacity ranges from laboratory level to semi-industrial scale, which allows us to work at different stages of production. In addition, we offer consulting services and solutions directly at the client's facilities. We promote innovation and creativity to satisfy the demands of research and application in the area of bioprocesses, offering economic and productive alternatives to optimize processes, reuse byproducts and promote environmental sustainability.
Department of Nuclear Sciences (DCN)
DCN, attached to the Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Agroindustry, is the only one in Ecuador and has great infrastructure, related to irradiation infrastructure as a source of cobalt 60 and electron beam processing. The installation of a Cobalt-60 irradiator, with an initial activity of 20,000 Curie, was completed in 1974. In 1985, a Particle Accelerator was installed at EPN and then in 2000, the Department of Nuclear Sciences was created at EPN and we have the largest irradiation infrastructure with Cobalt-60 source and electron beam processing.
In 1958, research with radioactive isotopes focusing primarily on thyroid function with I-131 began in the Department of Biomedical Applications. In 1959, the Departments of Agricultural and Medical Applications were created.
At the end of 1966, the International Atomic Energy Agency sent the British expert Dr. Ivan Birchall to give advice during the organization of the Dosimetry section. The expert carried out radiological control of all facilities in the country using machines that work with X-rays and radioactive sources, with the collaboration of the staff of the Institute of Nuclear Sciences. Later, the IAEA sent the Austrian expert, Dr. Norbert Vana, to train technicians from the Institute of Nuclear Sciences in thermoluminescent dosimetry techniques.
Department of Nuclear Science has a LAE has an Electron Linear Accelerator ELU - 6U with electron energy up to 7 MeV and igniter beam at 5 kW, Russian-made, manufactured by Techsnabexport and donated by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The irradiation process is continuous, through a conveyor belt, with a daily capacity of five tons.
DEMEX, attached to the Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Agroindustry, is a center located on the campus of the National Polytechnic School that focuses on applied research in the area of mineral resources and the environment, with the main focus on mineral processing, extractive metallurgy and effluent treatment and recycling of industrial materials.[5].
The Department of Extractive Metallurgy provides analysis, laboratory-scale testing, pilot-scale testing, an integrated laboratory, and a pilot plant with the ability to chemically process and analyze atomic absorption (Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AA)), optical mineralogy, and X-ray Crystallography.
Department of Informatics and Computer Sciences (DICC)
DICC, attached to the Faculty of Systems Engineering, is the main reference of the EPN in the field of knowledge and application of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). This department exerts a significant influence on national public opinion and is dedicated to the development of applied and generative technological research projects, which address problems of national relevance.
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (DICA)
DICA, attached to the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, maintains a close academic relationship in the training of students in Civil and Environmental Engineering careers. This department is responsible for providing students with the theoretical and practical knowledge necessary to excel in these fields of study. In addition to classroom instruction, DICA can offer internship, internship, and research project opportunities to complement students' academic training and prepare them to meet real-world challenges in civil and environmental engineering.
Department of Geology (DG)
DG, attached to the Faculty of Geology and Petroleum Engineering, is dedicated to geological research in order to contribute to territorial planning, the sustainable use of natural resources and the sustainable development of the country. In addition, it offers professional services in various fields related to earth sciences, focusing especially on the responsible and timely development of the mining industry, as well as the protection and management of natural resources with the aim of minimizing environmental impact. Likewise, it is responsible for the analysis and management of natural risks to guarantee the safety and well-being of the population.
Department of Petroleum (DP)
DP, attached to the Faculty of Geology and Petroleum Engineering, focuses on satisfying the scientific-technical demands of the country in the hydrocarbon area. This is achieved through dynamic interaction with the various actors in society, carrying out scientific research and providing professional and academic training to citizens with leadership capacity. In addition, it is committed to providing external consulting services with the objective of promoting the sustainable and sustainable development of the oil industry and the country as a whole.
Department of Basic Training (DFB)
DFB has the responsibility of coordinating, planning, directing, executing and evaluating the basic training subjects shared with other academic units of the National Polytechnic School. This is done in order to optimize institutional resources and ensure the academic excellence of students.
In addition, the DFB carries out research and extension activities, both independently and in collaboration with other units of the institution. These activities focus on new technologies applied to education and other emerging topics in this field.
The department also administers the leveling course for high school graduates, in accordance with the standards of the National Leveling and Admission System, required for entry to the different careers offered by the National Polytechnic School.
There are three types of leveling courses offered at the institution: in Engineering and Sciences, in Business and Economics, and in Technologies. These courses are designed to address the diversity of profiles and professional levels, guaranteeing academic quality.
The fundamental purpose of these courses is to reinforce basic knowledge in various areas of science so that high school graduates are better prepared to successfully continue their professional training.
Department of Social Sciences (DCS)
DCS promotes, through research, teaching and extension, humanistic training, knowledge of national and global reality, as well as the development of social responsibility within the polytechnic community. We seek to facilitate a more effective commitment to the demands of society. In addition, we contribute with a multidisciplinary vision of the academic activities of the National Polytechnic School through studies in the humanistic and social field.
Geophysical Institute
The Geophysical Institute"), which is part of the EPN, is the main institute dedicated to determining seismic and volcanic risk in the country, an important task because Ecuador is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire. Together with international Seismology and Volcanology teams, it monitors the Galapagos Islands and the Pacific Ring of Fire.
On August 14, 2015, the Geophysical Institute reported two explosions from the Cotopaxi volcano. ash falls in the south of Quito[6] National Polytechnic School Geophysical Institute reported that on August 13, at 5:21 p.m., a swarm of earthquakes was detected that lasted until 6:06 p.m. The largest earthquake of this swarm occurred at 17:23 and had a magnitude of 2.7.[7].
Cotopaxi Volcano which is causing the biggest scare right now is experiencing a lot of new activity has been recorded and as of 2015 and is under constant surveillance by the Geophysics Institute of EPN.[8][9][10][11][12][13].
On May 25, 2015, Wolf Island (Galapagos) "Wolf Island (Galapagos)") had a volcanic eruption and is now being monitored by the Geophysics Institute Escuela Politécnica Nacional[14][15][16][17]
In a report detailing the eruption, researchers from Ecuador's Geophysical Institute EPN stated that the plume reached an altitude of approximately 15 kilometers.
EPN adopted the History of European Universities model of research and laboratory teaching in science, physics and applied engineering. The Geophysical Institute, EPN, monitors volcano activity in the Andes mountains of Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands in the countries.[18].
Tungurahua Volcano (Quichua Tungur (Throat), Rauray (Burning): Burning in the throat) is an active stratovolcano located in the Andean zone of Ecuador. The volcano rises in the Eastern Cordillera&action=edit&redlink=1 "Cordillera Oriental (Ecuador) (not yet written)") of Ecuador, the limit of the provinces of Chimborazo and Tungurahua, giving its name to the latter. The last eruption of the volcano began in 1999 and continues to erupt to this day, with the most recent violent episodes occurring on February 1, 2014.[19][20].
On May 25, 2015, Wolf Island (Galapagos) "Wolf Island (Galapagos)") experienced a volcanic eruption that was monitored by the Geophysical Institute of the National Polytechnic School.[14][21][22][15]
