Trans-Siberian Highway
Introduction
The Trans-Siberian Highway is the unofficial name of a network of federal roads and highways that cross all of Russia, from the Baltic Sea in the Atlantic Ocean to the Sea of Japan in the Pacific Ocean. On the Asian road network, the route is known as AH6. It stretches for 11,000 kilometers, from Saint Petersburg to Vladivostok. It is considered one of the longest national highways in the world, along with the Trans-Canada Highway and Highway 1 "Highway 1 (Australia)") of Australia.
The route
The route, which in certain sections coincides with the European Route E30 and passes through the country of Kazakhstan for about 190 kilometers, is made up of seven federal highways.
Amur Highway
The most problematic section of the highway is between Chita and Khabarovsk. The first section of this route, connecting Belogorsk "Belogorsk (Amur)") with Blagoveschensk (124 km away), was built by gulag prisoners around 1949. It was extended and renovated between 1998 and 2001 and is currently part of the Asian route AH31 connecting Belogorsk with Dalian in China.
The Chita-Khabarovsk highway remained almost entirely incomplete until early 2004, when Russian President Vladimir Putin symbolically inaugurated the Amur Highway. Jim Oliver") and Dennis O'Neil crossed Russia by motorcycle using the Trans-Siberian Highway during the first three weeks of June in 2004. At that time, as described in Jim Oliver's book, Lucille and The XXX Road, the section between Chita and Khabarovsk represented a tough obstacle of swamps, stones, gravel, mud (vulnerable in the rasputitsa season), sand, wells, streams and detours with a notable absence of In the following years, some sections of the road were converted to a modern paved road with reflective lane dividing lines, while others remained single-lane gravel along the route of the turn-of-the-century Amur Cart Road. Construction of a 7-meter-wide road between Chita and Khabarovsk was estimated to be ready by 2010: the road is currently in good condition, having been completely renovated and enlarged, and features. with a smooth surface.
[1] The paving of the road was successfully completed on August 12, 2015.[2].
