Telephone District
The Telefónica District, operational headquarters of the Spanish multinational Telefónica, is an architectural project directed by Rafael de la Hoz.[3] The work was carried out in 36 months on an area of 370,000 square meters in Las Tablas "Las Tablas (Madrid)"), an expansion area in the northeast of Madrid near Alcobendas. The work has been recognized on different occasions, both for the management of the arrival of the Madrid Metro (Ronda de la Comunicación station on Line 10 "Line 10 (Madrid Metro)"), and for the land accesses.
The buildings cover an area of 140,000 square meters and was at the time the largest performance in Europe in terms of glass, even surpassing the actions of Banco Santander's Financial City and the Madrid-Barajas Airport. It is made up of thirteen buildings intended for offices, four of them with ten floors located at the ends, four with four floors, four with three floors and one more called central. In addition, the complex includes a shopping center open to the public and several additional buildings for auxiliary services (polyclinic, banks, pharmacy, optician, hairdresser, Movistar store and even a small Corte Inglés). The objective of Distrito Telefónica is to bring together all the company's resources in one location, in order to achieve significant savings in structure and greater efficiency in its management.[4].
The investment amounts to more than 500 million euros and has been financed mainly with the sale or rental of various properties that Telefónica owned in Madrid. The Telefónica District is home to 14,000 people, including visitors and the group's own staff.[5].
The president of Telefónica, César Alierta, signed an agreement with the then mayor of Madrid, Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón, for the landscaping of the outer perimeter of the Telefónica District. The project covers an area of about 22 hectares and foresees a global recovery and improvement action, which all Madrid residents will be able to enjoy, as it will be free access. The new urban forest will have about 2,000 trees, 41,000 shrubs, two hectares of grass, 3,000 climbing plants and 18,000 subshrubs.
