Technology parks (Infrastructure)
Introduction
The Monterrey Technological Research and Innovation Park or PIIT Monterrey, is a technological and scientific park located in the municipality of Apodaca, Nuevo León, Mexico that aims to "promote technological research and technology transfer between the academic sector and the business sector". It was built, at the request of the Mexican federal government, through the National Council of Science and Technology "National Council of Science and Technology (Mexico)"); the government of the State of Nuevo León; three universities: Autonomous University of Nuevo León, Institute of Technology and Higher Studies of Monterrey and the University of Monterrey and private initiative. It was inaugurated on September 24, 2009 and continues to grow.
History
The park was designed as part of the "Monterrey International City of Knowledge" program that aims to provide such a city with the necessary infrastructure for its economic development through scientific and technological innovation.[1] To achieve this objective, the triple helix model was taken, in order to incorporate private initiative, the state and federal governments, and the universities of Monterrey into the project. Such an agreement was finalized, through the signing of the agreement, on June 20, 2005, by the rectors of the Universities and the state governor José Natividad González Parás.[2] It was officially inaugurated on September 24, 2009.[3].
In 2012, it was announced that the Monterrey Technological Research and Innovation Park would be the base for another larger project called «Ciudad Innova» that would provide more housing and education infrastructure around the park, in an area of 2,000 hectares.[4] which began construction on September 21, 2012.[5]
On December 6, 2012, President Enrique Peña Nieto inaugurated five new research centers, as part of the applications to the Park.
As of June 2016, the PIIT has an accumulated investment of 600 million dollars, a constructed area of 110 hectares, 35 innovation centers and 1,000 scientists working there.[6].
