In Australia there are mainly 2 university degrees in the field of building technology of a general nature, called Building Engineering and Architectural Engineering, which are practically two specialties within the same university degree, they have their first three years in common, there are two specialties in the third year, one in installations and the other in structures, both differentiating in their fourth year in some subjects, on the part of Architectural Engineering, with a more technological nature, there are subjects in expansion of structural design and structures dynamics, of conditioning such as architectural lighting and installation systems, as well as installations in protection against fire, and on the part of Building Engineering, of a more managerial and economic nature, its subjects in the fourth year focus on the analysis and management of projects, as well as the analysis and calculation of costs and budgets. In the Australian model, all the responsibilities of the professional activity in Building Engineering are developed in the first cycle, with the second or postgraduate cycle being complementary studies (protection against fire and security or in the field of management and electrical installations).

There is also the Construction Management degree, a university degree basically focused on construction and the comprehensive management of the process.

In English, in the academic field, building engineering is associated with general training under the terms Architectural Technology & Construction Management, mainly in the United Kingdom and Ireland, Building Engineering, mainly in Canada and Australia, Architectural Engineering, mainly in the United States, although also used in the United Kingdom, likewise the term Building Construction is also common.

In Latin languages, especially in Europe, its name is homogeneous, the term used being that of building engineer, translated into each of the respective languages, in Italian it is ingegneria edile, in French ingénierie du bâtiment, and in the different Spanish languages, building engineering in Spanish, in Basque eraikunta ingeniaritza, in Catalan or Valencian enginyeria de l'edificació, and finally in Galician it is enxeñería da edificación.

In German, building engineering is linked to the term civil engineering or bauingenieur, and associated with the construction of structures under the term Hochbau and construction management under the term Bauleiter, however, the name to designate this engineering in German-speaking countries, both Germany and Austria, is Ingenieurin für Hochbau, which translated into Spanish would be the same as in Italian or French, construction engineering. construction, also to designate its profession in English, the most common name, anywhere in the world, is Building Engineering or building engineering.

There are different routes in their academic training, currently the most developed is the one that starts from a general training degree in building engineering, as in France, Italy, Australia, Canada, the United States, Malaysia or recently Spain, another route is as a specialty or discipline within the civil engineering degree, either as a specialization in the second cycle, through a master's degree in Building Engineering, or as a bachelor's degree associated with construction engineering, which covers both building and public works, or either a degree associated with structural engineering.
