Perforated galvanized sheets form the baffles or splitters within attenuators, featuring hole diameters of 1 to 3 mm to allow sound waves to interact with the fillers. These perforations, often micro-perforated for enhanced low-frequency absorption tuning, balance acoustic attenuation with minimal airflow resistance.[63][64]

Since the 2010s, eco-friendly alternatives such as recycled PET foam have emerged as acoustic fillers, offering comparable sound absorption while reducing volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions for improved indoor air quality. These materials, derived from post-consumer plastic bottles, provide sustainable options without fiberglass-related health concerns.[65][66][67]

Sound attenuators are evaluated and certified through standardized laboratory procedures to ensure reliable performance in controlling noise transmission, particularly insertion loss, which measures the reduction in sound power when the device is inserted into a duct system. Compliance with these standards is essential for manufacturers to validate claims about sound attenuation efficacy.

Testing methods distinguish between laboratory and in-situ approaches, with laboratory tests offering controlled conditions for repeatable results, while in-situ measurements account for real-world installations but introduce variables like flanking paths. Laboratory evaluations typically simulate airflow velocities between 5 and 15 m/s to mimic typical HVAC duct conditions, ensuring the data reflects practical aerodynamic interactions.[68]

Regulatory frameworks mandate noise control to protect workers and limit emissions. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standard 1910.95 requires employers to implement a hearing conservation program when noise exposure reaches an 8-hour time-weighted average of 85 dB(A), often necessitating sound attenuators in industrial settings to maintain levels below this threshold.[51] In the European Union, the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC imposes requirements for declaring noise emission values, including sound power levels, to ensure machinery does not exceed safe emission limits during operation.

For U.S. HVAC equipment, the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) certification under standards like AHRI 260 verifies overall sound performance, while sound attenuators are specifically tested per ASTM E477 for parameters including regenerated noise—with designs typically ensuring levels at least 10 dB below the insertion loss in relevant frequency bands to minimize additional noise contributions.[70][27] These certifications and tests promote interoperability and trust in product specifications across the industry.
