Shelving systems
Introduction
A pallet racking is a metal structure designed to store palletized merchandise, that is, placed on a pallet. They are composed of struts fixed to the ground and braced together forming ladders and horizontal stringers that form load levels.
Pallet racking is a very widespread storage system. Their success is due to their functionality and design: They are elements free of mechanical complexity, their assembly is relatively simple, they have a very considerable load capacity in terms of weight and volume, they optimize the available space, especially the storage height, they are modular so they adapt to any space and do not require maintenance.
Placing pallets on pallet racks must be carried out by mechanical means. For this, there are vehicles specially designed to place the pallets on the loading levels of the rack. Depending on the weight of the pallets, the degree of automation of the warehouse, the width of the aisles and the height of the shelves, there are different handling elements: stackers), counterbalanced forklifts, reach trucks, bilateral towers, trilateral towers, stacker cranes, etc.
Types of pallet racking
Depending on their characteristics, pallet racking can be:
