Safe community routes
Introduction
The Pedestrian League is an association "Association (law)") that is dedicated to promoting and defending the rights of pedestrians in Mexico, as well as mobility in public spaces. They participated, along with other organizations, in the drafting and review of the new Mexico City Traffic Regulations.[1][2].
They are made up of various organizations and citizen groups from all over Mexico[3] that seek to increase the interest and participation of citizens and demand improvements in pedestrian infrastructure, for which they organize dissemination campaigns on social networks and events, mainly the Pedestrian Congress, an annual meeting attended by professionals in the field from Mexico and Spanish-speaking countries.
The league lobbies with authorities to influence public policies aimed at mobility and pedestrianism. The members of the board of directors of this civil association are professionals and academics who since 2011 have been working on issues related to public space and mobility.
In 2014, the Pedestrian League drafted the Mexican Charter of Pedestrian Rights [4] and presented it in seven cities in the country. In this Charter they make recommendations for the government and society to privilege the pedestrian, "The letter also gives us the opportunity to make the pedestrian route known to society. We do not ask that the automobile disappear but we do ask that it be understood that urban space and mobility policies must privilege the pedestrian" in the words of Roberto Remes.[5].
He has shown his positions in the media in his country through different resources such as informative notes and opinion columns. As an example of this, they created the "Zoon Pedestrian" section in the online publication, Animal Político.[6].
