Use in gas turbines

During the period that the automotive industry became interested in gas turbines as a possible vehicle propulsion system (around 1965), Chrysler invented a unique type of heat exchanger[1]​ that consisted of a rotating drum constructed of corrugated metal (similar in appearance to corrugated cardboard). This drum rotated continuously by reduction gears driven by the turbine. The hot exhaust gases were directed through a portion of the device, which then rotated through a section carrying the induction air, where the intake air was heated. This recovery of combustion heat significantly increased the efficiency of the turbine engine, although it was ultimately proven to be impractical for an automotive application due to its low torque at low rpm. Even such an efficient engine, if large enough to deliver adequate performance, would have a low average fuel efficiency. Such an engine may be attractive in the future if combined with an electric motor in a hybrid vehicle due to its robust longevity and ability to burn a wide variety of liquid fuels.

A desiccant wheel is very similar to a heat wheel, but with a coating applied for the sole purpose of dehumidifying or "drying" the airstream. The desiccant is usually silica gel. As the wheel rotates, the desiccant alternately passes through the incoming air, where moisture is adsorbed, and through a "regeneration" zone, where the desiccant is dried and moisture is expelled. The wheel continues to rotate and the adsorption process repeats. Regeneration is typically accomplished by using a heating coil, such as a water or steam coil, or a direct-fired gas burner.

Heat wheels and desiccant wheels are often used in series configuration to provide the necessary dehumidification and recover heat from the regeneration cycle.

Heat wheels are not suitable for use where complete separation of the supply and exhaust air streams is required, as an exchange between the two occurs at the boundary of the heat exchanger and at the point where the wheel passes from one air stream to the other during its normal rotation. The first is reduced by brush seals, and the second is reduced by a small bleed section, formed by the lining of a small segment of the wheel, usually in the exhaust air stream.

Matrices made of fibrous materials, or with hygroscopic coatings, for latent heat transfer are much more susceptible to damage and degradation from friction or collision than plastic or plain metal materials, and are difficult or impossible to clean effectively if dirty. Care must be taken to properly filter the air streams on both sides (exhaust air and fresh air) of the wheel. Dirt adhering to either side will invariably be carried into the airstream on the other side.
