Introduction
The Geological and Mining Institute of Spain (IGME) of Spain is a research organization, integrated into the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) as a national center. Its current director is Rosa María Mateos Ruiz").[1].
It carries out scientific-technical work in the field of Earth and Marine Sciences and is in charge of managing the Geomining Museum where collections of minerals, rocks and fossils that come from all Spanish regions, its former overseas territories and various parts of the world are displayed.
History
Its origins come from the "Commission for the Geological Chart of Madrid and General of the Kingdom", founded by Isabel II of Spain in 1849.[4]
Between 1870 and 1910 it was renamed "Commission of the Geological Map of Spain"[5] and from 1910 it received the name "Geological Institute of Spain".[6][7].
In 1926 its definitive headquarters were established in the building at 23 Ríos Rosas Street in Madrid. In 1927 it received its current name, highlighting mining among its main objectives.[6][8] In 1977, after the promulgation of the Mining Promotion Law,[9] it became an autonomous organization.
In 1986, the Law on the Promotion and General Coordination of Scientific and Technical Research[10] attributed it the status of a public research organization.
For a few years, between 1988 and 2001, it was called the "Geomining Technological Institute of Spain" (ITGE).[6][11].
In March 2021 it was integrated into the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), ceasing to be an independent body and becoming a national center.[12].
