Respiratory Protection
Definition
Introduction to respiratory protection
Respiratory protection refers to the set of methods, equipment and practices designed to protect people's respiratory tract against the inhalation of harmful substances present in the air, such as dust, gases, vapors, fumes and aerosols. It is a fundamental aspect in industrial and occupational safety, especially in sectors such as construction, mining and the chemical industry, where exposure to contaminants can cause serious respiratory illnesses or even death.
The proper use of respiratory protective equipment (EPR) guarantees the health and safety of workers, minimizing risks associated with exposure to contaminating agents. In addition, respiratory protection is part of a comprehensive prevention strategy, complementing other measures such as ventilation and control of contaminating sources.
Types of Respiratory Protective Equipment
Filtering masks and respirators
Filtering masks and respirators are devices that protect the user by filtering the inhaled air, retaining solid and liquid particles present in the environment. These devices do not supply external air, but rather depend on ambient air to which specific filters are applied. They can be single-use or reusable, and are primarily classified based on their filtration efficiency and type of facial fit.
Among the most common masks are those of type N95, FFP2 and FFP3, which offer different levels of protection against suspended particles. The correct selection will depend on the type of contaminant, concentration and working conditions. In addition, its use requires a proper fit to prevent air leaks and ensure effective protection.
Supplied air respirators
Supplied-air respirators provide the user with an external source of clean air, either through a self-contained system or through ducts connected to a compressed air source. This type of equipment is used in environments with a high concentration of contaminants or where oxygen is insufficient, guaranteeing greater protection than filtering respirators.
