Neri & Hu
Introduction
Rossana Hu is a Taiwanese-born Chinese architect, interior designer, and educator renowned for her interdisciplinary approach to design, blending architecture, urban planning, and research to address contextual challenges in global projects.[1][2] As co-founder of Neri&Hu Design and Research Office in Shanghai alongside Lyndon Neri in 2006, she has led the firm in pioneering adaptive reuse, master planning, product design, and branding initiatives, earning international acclaim for innovative works that integrate cultural and historical narratives.[3] Currently, Hu holds prominent academic roles, including Chair and Professor of Architecture at Tongji University's College of Architecture and Urban Planning since 2021 and Chair and tenured Professor at the University of Pennsylvania's Stuart Weitzman School of Design since 2024, where she also directs the Master of Science in Design: Property Development & Design program.[1][4] Her career emphasizes the interplay of theory, practice, and criticism, with extensive lecturing and visiting professorships at institutions such as Harvard Graduate School of Design, Yale School of Architecture, and the University of California, Berkeley.[5][6]
Hu's educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture with a minor in music from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Master of Architecture and Urban Planning from Princeton University.[3] Before establishing Neri&Hu, she gained professional experience working for firms including Ralph Lerner, Michael Graves, and The Architects Collaborative in San Francisco, and she co-founded Design Republic in Shanghai in 2004 as a platform for retail, exhibitions, and education.[4] In 2015, she was appointed Creative Director of Stellar Works, expanding her influence into furniture and product design, and since 2018, she has served on the International Advisory Board of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra.[3]
Hu and Neri&Hu have received numerous prestigious awards, highlighting her impact on contemporary design. Notable honors include the 2025 Arts and Letters Award in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the 2020 Madrid Design Awards for founding partners, Wallpaper* Design of the Year in 2014, and the 2021 Frame Awards Lifetime Achievement Award, among others from organizations like Dezeen, ELLE Decor, and the German Design Council.[7][8] Her scholarly contributions include co-authoring books such as Thresholds: Space, Time and Practice (Thames & Hudson, 2021) and Reflective Nostalgia (Aedes Architecture Forum, 2022), alongside articles in journals like Architectural Design and Architectural Journal.[1] Through these endeavors, Hu continues to shape architectural discourse, advocating for designs that foster liminal spaces responsive to evolving urban and cultural landscapes.[9]
