Reinforcement of arches and vaults
Introduction
The fajón arch is a structural element that is part of the barrel vault and serves to reinforce it. It is similar to a rib that girdles said vault, strengthening it. This type of arch is embedded in the structure and its orientation is transverse to its axis; In this way it is divided into sections.
Characteristics
The transverse arch is visible from inside the vault, resting on the lateral pillars that support the roof, as a structural extension; Its tensions are transmitted to the outside through buttresses, in Romanesque architecture, or with buttresses, in Gothic architecture.
In simple words, transverse arches are the arches that transversely divide the barrel vault that covers a nave into sections and that unload its weight on the pilasters, to which small columns are sometimes attached.
There are some highlighting the barrel vaults and groin vaults; In Gothic architecture it is called perpian arch, forming part of the groin vault or ribbed vault.
