Introduction
The Mapocho Río Park is an urban park that is located in the communes of Quinta Normal and Cerro Navia, in the city of Santiago de Chile.
Its name is due to the fact that it is located on the southern urban bank of the Mapocho River, the main body of water that crosses the city. It is part of the final stretch of a megaproject of a route of continuous and interconnected parks, which starts from the Escrivá de Balaguer Park) in Lo Barnechea, culminating in this park in the northwestern sector of Santiago. With the inauguration of the Mapocho Río, the Mapocho Poniente parks and the Mapuche Ceremonial Park became part of the Mapocho Río, becoming a single park.
Section I of the park, located in the commune of Quinta Normal, was inaugurated on September 14, 2022, while section II was inaugurated on July 24, 2023.[2] The last sections of the park (sections III, IV, V and VI) were inaugurated on March 4, 2025.
History
The project was one of the proposals of the second government of Sebastián Piñera in terms of urban planning, with the budget for construction being approved by the Ministry of Finance in September 2019, valued at 84.5 billion pesos, one of the most expensive projects of this type. participatory together with the neighbors who will be the users.[4] On January 27, 2021, President Sebastián Piñera together with the Minister of Housing and Urban Planning (MINVU), Felipe Ward, attended the ceremony for the initiation of works on the urban park. The project was directed by Paola Gacitúa, architect of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning and designed by architects Hernán Fontaine and Diego Labbé.[5] The project was part of a MINVU plan, executed by the Emblematic Projects unit, to progressively increase the urban parks of the communes with less green areas per square kilometer, one of the indicators considered of the quality of life of their communities. inhabitants.[6] As well as a way to eliminate improvised and illegal garbage dumps that have formed around the river body, representing a health risk for nearby inhabitants.[5].
The first section of the park was inaugurated on September 14, 2022 in the commune of Quinta Normal, in a ceremony headed by the Minister of Housing and Urban Planning (MINVU) Carlos Montes Cisternas, by the Minister of SEGEGOB Camila Vallejo, the Mayor of Quinta Normal Karina Delfino and by the Mayor of Cerro Navia Mauro Tamayo.
