Introduction
An electronic shelf label (ESL) is a system used by retailers to display the price of products in their stores. Product prices are updated whenever the price is changed in a central management system.
The electronic labels market is expected to witness exponential growth around the year 2024 when the global electronic labels industry is expected to register over 16% CAGR.[1].
Most end users of labels are in the retail industry. The range of users varies from the food sector, hardware stores, sports stores, furniture and appliances to electronics.[2].
This growth forecast is due to the growing adoption of labels by the industry as they make price management more accessible for chains, reducing the time involved in changing labels.
With the rapid development of the so-called “internet of things” and its inclusion in the sector more than 79% of sellers in North America are investing in electronic labels and other smart devices. 72% of these sellers plan to reinvent their logistics chain management by adopting labels in their stores and, as a result, accelerating the growth of the label market.
Other studies show that Europe currently dominates the market in terms of size with more than a third of the market recorded in 2017 due to the strong presence of local and international retailers. However, the market in Asia-Pac is expected to grow at maximum CAGR in the forecast period. The market in that area is segmented into China, Japan, Australia, Singapore, South Korea and the rest of the region. The only countries with a potential market are China, Japan, Australia, Singapore and South Korea. Furthermore, the large-scale expansion of retailers in the region is responsible for this projected growth. A study by ABI Research concluded that the global electronic label market could reach two billion dollars in 2019.
