polynuclear structure
Introduction
The Jaén metropolitan area (Spain) is an urban agglomeration with a polynuclear structure formed by 15 municipalities[1] of the Province of Jaén "Province of Jaén (Spain)") whose estimated population totals 215,630 inhabitants (according to INE data for 2024). The definition of this metropolitan area is regulated by the Territorial Planning Plan of Andalusia, Decree 206/2006, of November 28, 2006.
It has great importance within the Province of Jaén "Province of Jaén (Spain)"), since along with the provincial capital, municipalities such as Martos, Mancha Real or Mengíbar among others stand out, which have a powerful industrial fabric that stands out not only within the Province of Jaén "Province of Jaén (Spain)"), but also at the level of Andalusia.
At a demographic level, the Jaén metropolitan area encompasses more than 34% of the total population of the province, despite representing only 11% of the territory. It is, therefore, the most populated region in the entire province. Despite this, it occupies last place among the ten metropolitan areas recognized in Andalusia by population.
Geography
This metropolitan area should not be confused with the Metropolitan Region of Jaén, also called Metropolitan Area of Jaén, which emerged on March 27, 2003 according to the catalog[2] prepared by the Department of Tourism and Sports of the Government of Andalusia, in which the regions of Jaén are modified. Although it is true that this regional classification does not coincide with the true area of influence of the capital defined by the POTA as the municipalities of Porcuna, Santiago de Calatrava and Higuera de Calatrava are not included in the delimitation of the metropolitan area (prior to the 2003 catalogue, they were included in the La Campiña region).
The metropolitan area of Jaén includes the municipalities of the region that bears the same name or also comarca de Jaén, a municipality in the Sierra Mágina region, which is the case of Pegalajar, and a municipality in the Sierra Sur, Valdepeñas de Jaén.
