Polycentric urban networks
Introduction
This article collects, in table form, the largest metropolitan areas in Europe by population, according to five different statistical sources. The list includes metropolitan areas that have a population of more than 1 million.
The list includes metropolitan areas according only to studies by ESPON, Demographia World, United Nations, OECD and "CityPopulation Studies". For this reason, some metropolitan areas, such as the Italian Metropolitan Area of Genoa (whose population has more than 1,510,000 inhabitants since 2012, according to the Official Report of "CityRailway"), are not included in this list, with data from other statistical survey institutes.
The figures in the first column come from the ESPON project, 'Study on Urban Functions', which defines cities according to the concept of a functional urban area (core of the urban area defined morphologically on the basis of population density, plus the surrounding workforce defined on the basis of commuting). The figures in the second column come from the Eurostat Urban Audit and correspond to Larger Urban Zones. The figures in the third column come from the United Nations World Urbanization Outlook and correspond to urban areas. The figures in the fourth column come from the OECD Territorial Surveys and correspond to "metropolitan regions". The figures in the last column come from the website citypopulation.de and correspond to agglomerations. More information on how the areas are defined can be found in the original documents. These figures should be considered an interpretation, not a conclusive fact.
