Introduction
The metropolitan area of Alicante-Elche has 870,972 inhabitants (2023),[1] being the eighth metropolitan area in Spain by population, behind those of Madrid,[2] Barcelona,[3] Valencia,[4] Seville,[5] Málaga,[6] Bilbao[7] and Zaragoza, if we look at their metropolitan territorial autonomous plans since it is the autonomous communities that They have powers in metropolitan territorial management.[8].
This is the set of urban areas of Alicante (512,352) and Elche (358,620), forming a bipolar "Bipolar (disambiguation)") or polycentric area.
Its definition is official and is based on its own Territorial Action Plan (PAT).[9].
It is located south of the Valencian Community, in the southeast of Spain and is characterized by strong urban expansion and population growth during recent decades.
While in the Alicante area the service sector predominates, in Elche, it is the industrial sector that has more weight.
Currently it is made up of the following municipalities: Agost, Aguas de Busot, Alicante, Aspe, Busot, Campello, Catral, Crevillente, Dolores "Dolores (Alicante)"), Elche, Hondón de las Nieves, Hondón de los Frailes, Jijona, Muchamiel, San Fulgencio "San Fulgencio (Alicante)"), San Juan de Alicante, Santa Pola, San Vicente del Raspeig, Tibi and Torremanzanas.[10].

PATAE
The Territorial Action Plan of the functional area of Alicante-Elche or PATAE defines a common area focused on the municipalities of Alicante and Elche that would cover the following locations:[11][12].
History
Due to urban and economic growth, it was in 1993 when the Department of Territory prepared the first documents to regulate this metropolitan area, which at that time was called Alicante-Elche-Santa Pola triangle.[14][15].
In 1995, the PATEMAE, Territorial Action Plan for the Metropolitan Environment of Alicante and Elche, would appear for the first time, with its last modification being in 2016 including the municipalities that currently comprise it and becoming known as PATAE.[16].
