Peter Rice, (Dundalk, January 16, 1935 - London, October 25, 1992)[1]​ was an Irish structural engineer, specialized in steel structures who participated in some of the most notable architectural projects of the mid- and late-century. In 1992 he received the RIBA Gold Medal, one of the most prestigious awards worldwide in the field of architecture.

Nació en Dundalk, en el Coundado de Louth"), Irlanda y pasó su infancia entre esta localidad y los pueblos de Gyles Quay") y Inniskeen. Cursó sus estudios en el Queen's Univesity of Belfast") para trasladarse posteriormente el Imperial College London en Londres. Inicialmente se matriculó de ingeniería aeronáutica pero cambió de parecer y acabó estudiando ingeniería civil. Cuando terminó sus estudios entró a trabajar en el estudio de Ove Arup (Ove Arup & Partners) donde su primer encargo fue trabajar en la solución para la cubierta de la ópera de Sídney.

Death

In 1991 he was diagnosed with a brain tumor that would eventually cause his death in 1992.[1]​.

In 1992 he became the second engineer in history to receive the RIBA Gold Medal, awarded by the Royal Institute of British Architects. The first engineer to receive such recognition was Ove Arup. He was also the second Irishman to win this award after Michael Scott.

The Peter Rice Award") was established by the Harvard University Graduate School of Design in 1994 in recognition of the ideals and principles shown by this eminent engineer.[2]​.
