A pavilion (pavilion in English and pavillon in French) comes from Old French paveillun (century), and from Latin papilio (butterfly = papillon in French). This is how the lord's tent was designated. The analogy with the insect would come from the sumptuous appearance of medieval shops. Hence the concept of a light but pleasant structure created on an open space and with a secondary function.
