Introduction
The working day, working day or working time,[1] refers to the number of hours that the worker actually works in a shift or day. It can also refer to the weekly, monthly or annual calculation of time worked.[2][3].
The working day must be differentiated from "working hours." The working day represents the "number of hours that the worker provides his service" while the "schedule" establishes the time or hours of entry or exit.[4][5].
In general terms, the usual working hours in countries around the world are around 40 hours per week, however, this situation does not occur everywhere, with notable disparities: from 35 to 48 hours.[6].
The usual working day is 8 hours a day, but legally longer hours can be agreed upon, as long as it does not exceed the weekly total. Another case is extended working hours, such as the case of some police officers who work 12 hours with 24 hours of rest.
International regulation
Treaty of Versailles 1919 - 8 hours
After the First World War, the treaty known as the Treaty of Versailles was signed by 50 countries in June 1919, which establishes in the fourth point of its article 427 (Economic Clauses, Part XIII - Labor, articles 387 to 427):[1].
International Labor Organization 1919 - 8 hours
In October 1919, a few months after the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, the members of the International Labor Organization met at the Washington Conference where the agreement was established by which the hours of work in industries were limited to eight hours a day or forty-eight hours a week - 6 working days a week - an issue that constituted the first item on the agenda of the meeting, and that after having decided that these proposals would take the form of an international agreement, The constitution of the agreement was agreed as a convention, which may be cited as the "Convention on Hours of Work - Industry - of 1919", and which was submitted to ratification by the Members of the International Labor Organization in accordance with the provisions of the ILO Constitution.[7].
