Operation and maintenance contract
Introduction
SkyTrain is a mass transportation line for the metropolitan area of the city of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It is the oldest driverless light rail system and also one of the longest in the world. It consists of three lines. The Expo and Millennium lines connect downtown Vancouver with the surrounding cities of Burnaby, New Westminster and Surrey (British Columbia). The Canada line connects downtown Vancouver with Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and the city of Richmond (British Columbia). SkyTrain uses an automation technology called SelTrac and runs primarily on elevated rails, which is how it gets its name.
The operation of this system is electric and uses linear induction motors, similar to those used on the Scarborough RT subway line in Toronto, Canada, the Kelana Jaya line in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the Detroit's People Mover line in the city of Detroit, United States, and the AirTrain JFK line in New York City.
Two of the SkyTrain lines are operated by the British Columbia Rapid Transit Company (BCRTC) and the third line is operated by ProTrans BC Operations Ltd. under contract to Translink.
