museum space
Introduction
The Discovered City is a musealized archaeological site located in the basement of the Alicante City Hall building, in the Town Hall Square "Plaza del Ayuntamiento (Alicante)").[1] This exhibition space allows you to contemplate the remains of the ancient Islamic medieval city of Medina Laqant, as well as vestiges from earlier and later periods, ranging from the Roman era to the Modern Age.[2].
History
During the expansion works of the town hall building in the 1990s, important archaeological remains were discovered that evidenced the presence of superimposed urban structures from different periods.[2] These findings led to the creation of a museum space that allows the public to learn about the historical evolution of the city of Alicante from its origins.[1].
Description
The tour of The Discovered City allows you to observe:.
• - Remains of the medieval Islamic wall of the 1st century, built with stone ashlars and rammed earth, which delimited the medina of Laqant.
• - Homes attached to the wall, with architectural elements characteristic of the Islamic era.
• - Cobblestone streets and urban structures that show the organization of the city at different times.
• - Remains of buildings from later periods, including Renaissance and Baroque elements.
The space is equipped with walkways and information panels that facilitate understanding of the historical and archaeological context of the remains.[1].
Importance
The Discovered City is a tangible testimony of the urban evolution of Alicante over the centuries. Its musealization allows visitors to understand the overlap of cultures and architectural styles that have shaped the current city. Furthermore, it is an outstanding example of integration of archaeological heritage in the contemporary urban environment.[2].
