Metaverse under construction
Introduction
Metaverse is a post-reality universe, a perpetual and persistent multi-user environment that merges physical reality with digital virtuality. It is based on the convergence of technologies, such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), that allow multisensory interactions with virtual environments, digital objects and people. Therefore, metaverse is an interconnected network of immersive and social environments on persistent multi-user platforms.[1][2].
It is an environment where humans interact and exchange virtual experiences through the use of "Avatar (Internet)" avatars, through software in cyberspace, which acts as a metaphor for the real world, but without necessarily having its limitations.[3].
It is generally composed of multiple shared and persistent three-dimensional virtual spaces, linked to a perceived virtual universe.[4][5].
In a broader sense, metaverse can refer not only to virtual worlds, but to the multidimensional experiences of use and application of the Internet as a whole, especially the spectrum that combines web 2.0, augmented reality, third-dimensional technology and virtual reality.[6].
So far, applied uses of metaverse have been identified in the field of entertainment, tele-education,[7][8] telehealth, telemedicine[9] and especially in the field of the digital economy,[10] where new forms of value such as non-fungible tokens (NFT) are beginning to emerge.[11].
Although the most successful and recognized metaverse experience has been Second Life, the Meta corporation (previously known as Facebook, Inc.), owned by American magnate Mark Zuckerberg, is expected to lead the execution and new developments in the field of metaverses in the coming years, since it is the global company that is investing the most human and technological resources in this technological field, including software and hardware technology.[12].
There are also other projects related to the world of cryptocurrencies, such as Decentraland, which already has its own metaverse operational.[13].
History
The term "metaverse" has its origins in the novel Snow Crash published in 1992 by Neal Stephenson, which recreates a consensual universe based on our own universe.[14] In the novel the term "metaverse" refers to a fictional virtual world[15] or a collective and frequently shared virtual space created by convergence and compatibility with an aspect of external reality.
