Metadata (Documentation)
Introduction
A Metadata Registry is a central location in an organization where Metadata content is stored and maintained in a controlled method.
Use of Metadata Registry
Metadata records are used when data is used consistently within an organization or group of organizations. Examples that include that situation:.
Common characteristics of a metadata record
Typically a metadata record has the following characteristics:
Clear separation of semantics and system-specific limitations
Because metadata records are used to store both semantics (the meaning of a data element) and limitations of specific systems (for example, the maximum length of a string), it is important to identify which systems impose these restrictions and document them. For example, the maximum length of a string should not change the meaning of a data element.
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has published standards for metadata records called ISO/IEC 11179"), and also ISO15000-3 and ISO15000-4.
ISO standards
Contenido
ISO/IEC 11179
ISO/IEC 11179 says they are tied with "traditional" metadata: "We limit the scope of the term as used here in ISO/IEC 11179 to the description of data - the more traditional use of the word."
