Logistics KPIs (Key Indicators)
Introduction
The Logistics Performance Index ( LPI )[1] is a tool developed by the World Bank that allows evaluating the efficiency of a country's logistics system.[2] It consists of the weighted average of the country's scores in six key dimensions: customs performance, quality of infrastructure, ease of organizing international shipments, quality of logistics services, ability to track and trace shipments, and punctuality of deliveries. In addition, it incorporates practical data that measures logistics efficiency. This measure indicates the relative ease and efficiency with which products can be moved within and to a country. According to the 2023 LPI,[3] Singapore and Finland are the most efficient countries with the best logistics performance.[4].
The Logistics Performance Index (LPI) was published by the World Bank every two years from 2010 to 2018, with a hiatus in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a restructuring of the index methodology, leading to it being republished only in 2023. The LPI is based on data collected from actors involved in the countries where they operate and those with which they trade. From 2023, the LPI incorporates certain key performance indicators and big data to complement the survey results.[5].
The data produced by the LPI have been used in numerous studies and policy reports prepared by multilateral organizations. The conclusions of the index serve as a general global reference both for actors in the logistics sector and for those who use its services.[6] The results of the LPI have also been welcomed by the academic community.
