Local energy communities
Introduction
A sustainable community energy system is an integrated approach to supplying a local community with its energy needs through renewable energy. The approach can be seen as a development of the concept of distributed generation.
These systems are based on a combination of district heating, district cooling), plus "electricity generation islands" that are linked together through a private wire electrical system (bypassing much of the normal electrical grid, to shorten transmission and load losses, as well as to increase the robustness of the system). Therefore, the surplus from one generation island can be used to offset the shortfall in another.
