Lighting Ordinance
Introduction
DarkSky International, formerly International Dark-Sky Association ( IDA), [1] is a United States-based nonprofit organization founded in 1988 by David Crawford, a professional astronomer, and Tim Hunter, a physician and amateur astronomer. DarkSky's mission is to "preserve and protect the nighttime environment and our dark sky heritage through quality outdoor lighting." [2].
Light pollution is the result of outdoor lighting that is not adequately shielded, allowing light to shine into the eyes and into the night sky. Direct light shining into the eyes is called glare, and light directed at the night sky above the horizon causes celestial glow. Lighting can also cause light intrusion when it enters unwanted areas (for example, a neighbor's yard and windows). DarkSky is the first and currently largest organization of the dark-sky movement.
Main focus
DarkSky's primary focus is to raise awareness about the value of dark, star-filled night skies and encourage their protection and restoration through education about the problems and solutions, including outdoor lighting practices that generate less light pollution. As of 2011, the organization had around 5,000 members in 70 countries.
International Dark Sky Locations
Contenido
International Dark Sky Sanctuaries
DarkSky describes Dark Sky Sanctuaries as "the most remote (and often darkest) places in the world whose state of preservation is most fragile."
