Introduction
The Starlight Foundation is an entity created in 2009 for the dissemination of astronomy and the promotion, coordination and management of the Starlight movement.
Background
In 2007, the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands (IAC) promoted, with the participation of other national and international entities and organizations, the “I International Starlight Conference” which, under the motto “Starlight, a Common Heritage”, aimed to study - from different perspectives - the need to protect the night sky on the planet and to find ways for its enjoyment by society.[1] From the conference emerged the principles and recommendations contained in “The Declaration on the Defense of the Night Sky and the Right to Starlight” (“Declaration of La Palma, also called Starlight Declaration” 2007).[2][3] Starlight, as a whole, is an integrated action of UNESCO and is supported by the International Astronomical Union and the World Tourism Organization, emerged from the IAC.[3].
History
The Starlight Foundation is an entity, with its own legal personality, created in 2009 by the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands (IAC) and with the majority contribution in its equity capital from the Consulting Corporación 5, whose main purpose is the dissemination of astronomy and the promotion, coordination and management of the Starlight movement.[1][4].
It is a non-profit entity that encompasses, coordinates and manages the set of ideas, projects, people, reflections and activities that, under the name Starlight, offers society a different way of valuing the starry sky. Likewise, it fights to protect it and is aware that, by doing so, it takes care of a scientific and cultural heritage, while safeguarding the habitat of a large number of species that need the darkness of night for their survival.[4].
