Concept of level transmitters
Level transmitters are devices used to measure and monitor the height or level of liquids, granular solids or powders within containers, tanks or industrial processes. Its main function is to convert the height of the material into an electrical signal that can be interpreted and used for automatic control, visualization or recording.
These devices are essential in multiple industrial sectors, such as chemical, petrochemical, food, pharmaceutical and water treatment, allowing efficient, safe and precise management of resources and production processes.
Operating principles
Differential pressure measurement
Differential pressure level transmitters measure the pressure difference between two points to determine the height of liquid in a tank. This principle is based on the fact that the hydrostatic pressure generated by a column of liquid is proportional to its height and density.
Two pressure taps are installed: one at the bottom of the tank and another generally at the top or ambient part. The pressure difference between these points is converted into an electrical signal that correlates with the fluid level.
This method is especially suitable for homogeneous liquids and is widely used for its precision and robustness under industrial conditions.
Ultrasound measurement
Ultrasonic level transmitters use high-frequency sound waves to measure the distance from the transmitter to the surface of the liquid or solid. The device emits an ultrasonic pulse and measures the time it takes to reflect back.
The measured flight time is converted into distance, and therefore, into the level of the material inside the container. This technology is non-invasive, which avoids contact with the product, ideal for corrosive or dangerous liquids.
Additionally, it works well with liquids and solids, although it may be affected by atmospheric conditions, foam or dust on the surface.
