Introduction
Level sensors detect the level of liquids, fluidized solids, granular materials and powders that have a free upper surface. The surfaces of substances become essentially horizontal in their containers (or other physical boundaries) due to gravity, while most grain solids accumulate at an angle of repose up to a certain maximum angle. The substance to be measured may be inside a container or may be in its natural form (for example, a river or lake). The level measurement can be continuous or punctual. Continuous level sensors measure the level within a specific range and determine the exact amount of substance at a given location, while point level sensors only indicate whether the substance is above or below the detection point. Generally, the latter detect excessively high or low levels.[1].

Vibrating tuning fork sensor for liquids and solids

Single probe vibrating level sensors are ideal for massive levels of powders. Since only one sensitive element contacts the powders, bridging between two probe elements is eliminated and carrier buildup is minimized. Vibration of the probe tends to remove material buildup on the probe element. Vibrating level sensors are not affected by dusts, static charge buildup from dielectric dusts, or changes in conductivity, temperature, pressure, humidity, or moisture content. Another alternative is tuning fork style vibration sensors. They tend to be less expensive, but are prone to buildup of materials between the cans.[3].
