Basic concept of level indicators
Level indicators are devices or instruments used to measure and display the height or quantity of a liquid, solid or material stored within a container, tank or given space. Its main function is to provide accurate and continuous information on the level of the material to facilitate the control, monitoring and operation of industrial, construction, supply or storage processes.
These instruments are essential in multiple sectors, such as construction, engineering, the chemical industry, water or fuel storage, and in automated systems that require exact measurements to ensure safety, efficiency and functionality. Level indicators can be manual, visual or electronic, depending on the application and precision required.
Operating principles
Measurement based on hydrostatic pressure
One of the most common principles for measuring the level of liquids is hydrostatic pressure. This method is based on the fact that the pressure exerted by a column of fluid is proportional to its height and density. A sensor placed at the bottom of the tank measures this pressure, which is converted into an electrical signal that indicates the level of the liquid.
This principle is especially useful for homogeneous liquids and closed systems, as it provides continuous and accurate measurements. However, liquid density, temperature, and possible variations must be considered to ensure accuracy.
In construction, this method is frequently used in storage tanks for water, cement or other fluids, allowing real-time monitoring and early warnings to avoid overflows or voids.
Ultrasonic measurement
Ultrasonic technology uses sound waves that are emitted from a sensor towards the surface of the material to be measured. The time it takes for the wave to reflect and return to the sensor translates into the distance to the material level. This technique is non-invasive and can measure liquids or solids.
