Introduction
Sliding is a type of friction movement between two surfaces in contact, which contrasts with the rolling movement, in which the movement occurs without the rolling body slipping on the surface it rests on. Both types of motion can occur in bearings.
Friction is a force that opposes relative motion or the tendency toward such motion between two surfaces. Friction can damage or 'wear' the contacting surfaces. However, wear can be reduced through lubrication. The science and ensuing technology that studies friction, lubrication and wear is known as tribology.
Sliding can occur between two objects of arbitrary shape, while rolling friction is the frictional force associated with the rotational motion of an object (similar to a disk or other object of revolution) capable of rolling on a surface. Generally, the rolling resistance friction force is less than that associated with sliding friction.[1] Typical values for the rolling friction coefficient are less than those for sliding friction.[2].
Similarly, sliding friction typically generates a greater amount of heat and sound. One of the most common examples of sliding friction is the braking motion of a motor vehicle when the tires lock on the road, a process that generates a considerable amount of heat and sound"), and is generally taken into account when assessing the value of noise pollution generated by a road.[3].
Sliding friction
Sliding friction (also called kinetic friction) is a contact force that opposes the sliding motion of two objects or of an object and a surface. Almost always less than static friction, which is why it is easier to move an object once it starts moving than to make the object start moving from a rest position.
