The platforms have been restructured several times. Originally there was only one departure platform and one arrival platform (the current platforms 1 and 8). In later years, with the growth of railway traffic, new platforms were built, reducing the size and splendor of the original ones. The secondary building that currently houses platforms 9, 10 and 11 dates back to that time.

In 1987 the so-called "Kings Cross fire" occurred, in which 31 people died. This fire actually occurred at St. Pancras station.

On July 7, 2005, a terrorist attack occurred, in which a bomb exploded in the subway station and another on a double-decker bus near the station.

Paradoxically, platforms 9 and 10 are located in a secondary building separate from the main one and are opposite each other with the train tracks in the middle. Apparently, Rowling intended for this secret platform to be in the main part of the station but she mixed up the platform numbers.
