Kenneth Frampton (Theorist)
Introduction
Kenneth Frampton (Woking, England, November 20, 1930) is an English architect and writer.
Biography
He studied architecture at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London. His professional activity is divided between that of an architect and that of an architectural historian and critic. He currently teaches at the Graduate School of Architecture and Planning, Columbia University in New York, as a Ware Professor. However, he has also taught classes at such important centers as the Royal College of Art in London and the ETH in Zurich, and, recently at the University of Virginia, where he has held the Thomas Jefferson Chair.
He is the author of numerous essays on modern and contemporary architecture. His most important work is Critical History of Modern Architecture, in which he makes a complete analysis of modern architecture. In 2017 he recognized that his texts were Eurocentric and should include the architecture of India, China and Africa and demand the participation of women.[1][2].
He is a member of the Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies in New York, whose members include Peter Eisenman, Manfredo Tafuri and Rem Koolhaas. He is co-founder of its magazine Oppositions.
In 2012, he was awarded the Erich Schelling Architectural Theory Prize.
In 2018 he was recognized with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Architecture Biennale.[3].
